How we assign SDGs

  1. We read each project’s title, abstract, keywords and scientific topics from CORDIS.
  2. We compare that text with the official EU wording of each of the 169 UN SDG targets (the detailed aims under the 17 goals). Statistical indicators exist in the taxonomy; we show them on the concept sheet and we do not attach them to projects — public abstracts almost never support that level of precision.
  3. A goal is kept only when distinctive words overlap. Everyday Horizon phrases are not enough. Some goals (poverty, gender, energy, industry, consumption, partnerships) need extra keywords so they are not over-used.
  4. Scientific topic tags can strengthen a match that is already there. They never create a new one.
  5. The computer method is a standard text comparison (TF-IDF plus cosine similarity). No commercial AI is called. Rows marked uncertain in the CSV are the weakest matches.
What this is not

Abstracts are written to win funding. Pure laboratory research may correctly have no SDG. Treat uncertain rows as suggestions for a human curator, not as catalogue facts. These scores do not measure the impact of a grant.
